Good Friday

Friday before Easter Sunday — date varies each year

Good Friday is observed two days before Easter Sunday and commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a bank holiday throughout the United Kingdom — in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Good Friday marks the beginning of the Easter bank holiday weekend and is one of the most significant dates in the Christian calendar. Trading restrictions apply in England and Wales — large shops cannot open without a special licence on Good Friday. Most businesses, schools and public services are closed. The date changes each year, calculated as the Friday before Easter Sunday.

History & Origins

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is one of only two UK bank holidays not set by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 — the other being Christmas Day. Its date is determined by the ecclesiastical calendar, not by statute, and so it cannot be moved by the government. Good Friday has been observed as a public holiday in England since medieval times.

Historically, Good Friday was one of the most strictly observed non-trading days in the UK, with pubs legally required to close and most commerce halted. Today trading restrictions are far less severe, but many businesses still close or operate reduced hours.

The Easter bank holiday weekend runs from Good Friday through to Easter Monday. Note that Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not bank holidays in the UK. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland — but not in Scotland, which does not observe Easter Monday.

Why the Date Can Change

Good Friday is tied to the ecclesiastical calendar and its date varies each year. Easter Sunday is calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March (the spring equinox) — a rule established at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Good Friday falls exactly two days before Easter Sunday. Good Friday cannot be substituted — if it coincides with another event, there is no replacement day.

How It's Observed

Hot cross buns are the defining Good Friday food — spiced sweet buns marked with a white cross, traditionally eaten on Good Friday only (though they are now sold from January onwards in UK supermarkets). Folklore holds that hot cross buns baked on Good Friday will not go mouldy and have healing properties.

Fish and chips on Good Friday is a widespread tradition rooted in the Christian practice of abstaining from meat on Good Friday — fish being permitted. Many British families still observe this custom today regardless of religious belief.

Pace egging is a traditional egg rolling and egg tapping custom found in parts of northern England. Avenham Park in Preston, Lancashire, hosts the most famous annual egg rolling event on Easter Monday (the slope on Avenham Park has been used for egg rolling since at least the 19th century). Mumming plays associated with pace egging also survive in some communities.

Church services — including the Three Hours' Devotion and evening services — are held across the country on Good Friday.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Good Friday's date calculated?

Good Friday falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is calculated using a formula established at the Council of Nicaea (325 AD): it is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. This means Easter Sunday can fall anywhere between 22 March and 25 April, and Good Friday correspondingly between 20 March and 23 April. The calculation uses ecclesiastical (not astronomical) full moons.

Why is it called 'Good'?

The origin of 'Good' in Good Friday is debated. One theory holds that 'good' is an archaic use of the word meaning 'holy' or 'pious' — the same sense found in phrases like 'the Good Book'. Another theory suggests it derives from 'God's Friday' (similar to 'goodbye' from 'God be with ye'). The Oxford English Dictionary notes that 'good' as applied to this day means 'observed as holy.' Other languages name it very differently: German calls it Karfreitag (Mourning/Sorrowful Friday), French calls it Vendredi saint (Holy Friday).

Are pubs open in the UK on Good Friday?

Yes. Pubs in the UK are open on Good Friday — there is no legal requirement to close. Historically, Good Friday had strict licensing restrictions and pubs were required to close, but these laws were progressively relaxed and the last mandatory Good Friday pub closure requirement was removed decades ago. Pubs in England and Wales now operate under normal licensing hours on Good Friday.

Is Easter Saturday a bank holiday in the UK?

No. In the UK, Easter Saturday (the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday) is not a bank holiday. The bank holidays over the Easter period are Good Friday and Easter Monday (England, Wales and Northern Ireland only — Scotland does not observe Easter Monday). Easter Sunday and Easter Saturday are regular days in terms of bank holiday legislation, though many businesses and schools treat the whole weekend as an extended break.
